“I can’t do a southern French accent” once confessed Angèle in the making of one of her videos. Coming back to Marmande was important to her, if only to work on that impression. She went from pop newest discovery to safe bet in record time. As evidence, her album Brol was awarded the Revelation of the Year prize during the last Victoires de la musique, the French equivalent for the Grammys. With her velvet voice, her casual tone, her mischievous little face, her contemporary language and her singular world, the young woman from Brussels appears to have reinvented the concept of pop singer. She’s comfortable with her popular references and doesn’t fear neither ridicule nor awkwardness. You’d better get used to Angèle. Belgian is the new cool.
